So much for the warm Atlantic Current

The other morning I was reading my news feeds over breakfast and the BBC was reporting that schools in Wales were closed due to snow. (I have never sorted out how to just get the BBC world feed, so I get lots local UK news.) That morning it was about 10C here, sunny and a nice day. So the UK got sno...

RISC V mini itx

Here is a Risc V mini itx board that looks pretty interesting and is a decent price as well. The base model starts at less than the Pi 5, and all tricked out it is still ~$120. <https://milkv.io/jupiter#buy> Here is a YouTube video on building PC with this board. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX9...

Re: For the first time ever, AMD outsells Intel in the datacenter space

During the era of the G3 and G4 desktop Macs (98-04) most machines had two sets of jumper blocks on the mother board. One block set the buss speed and the other set the processor multiplier. That was the only time I did any over clocking. The processors were also socketed and the fiddling I did with...

Re: Rocky Linux

I installed Rocky Linux KDE Workstation on the Lenovo T580. It is the stock Anaconda installer used by Fedora. The distro uses the default Fedora KDE spin theme. You need to setup a root account. When setting up a user account you can set the user to be administrator, which does set up sudo. It woul...

Rocky Linux

I have not tried Rocky Linux. I thought of it as a RedHat clone and a server OS. This past weekend the YouTube channel Explaining Computers had a video that talked of Rocky Linux where he said that it was a Linux distro that was compatible with commercial software, in his case it was Da Vinci Resolv...

Re: For the first time ever, AMD outsells Intel in the datacenter space

Intel has always seemed to me that it put as much effort into its marketing and hype as it did into its cpus. I was shocked to see the prices on the server cpus. They must have a reject rate that is through the roof. Intel does have a lot of fabrication facilities though so I suspect they will alway...

Re: Happy Halloween

Well the big Halloween trick this year was the arrival of the time change. We are back to standard time. Most of our clocks were just never change. The clock on the thermostat, car, microwave, VCR and oven stay on standard time all year. Connected tech stuff of course updates itself automatically. T...

Bambu Studio

I am fascinated by 3d printing, even though I have come to realize it is not something I will ever get involved in. Today's Fedora Magazine article was about new Flatpak software on Flathub and one of the new pieces of software mentioned was Bambu Studio. I know there are 3d print people in the foru...

Happy Halloween

On Halloween in 1991 we got 48 inches of snow. So this morning wife and I put on our "We survived the Halloween Blizzard of 1991" sweatshirts. No blizzard is expected today, but it is snowing, with gusting winds. I had always noted that the entire UK is further north than we are and though...

Re: PCLinuxOS

Cheese was my first choice, however Cheese is not in the PCLinuxOS repositories. PCLinuxOS also does not install sudo. They do include su which when used with my login password makes me root. That just feels wrong. Su should allow you to become root, but to get to root using an adminstrator password...
