Turns out I had forgotten to exclude grub in unattended-upgrades, so it blithely ran and bust it. Normally it should ask for the location for grub to be installed with a curses checkbox....

In the end I used rescatux to straighten it out - no problem.
I long ago got rid of unattended upgrades for EXCEEDINGLY similar reasons. Causes me nothing but annoyances. On the systems I want to do upgrades, I set up scripts w/ crontab to do it, I still don't use unattended upgrades.

Didn't have a single machine of my own that was ever affected by this, and all of them (including the 5485 that is again running linux (Endeavour)) have the updates at this point.

Ive updated Feren OS which is Ubuntu based and Netrunner which is Debian based and Rosa which is RPM based and none have had any issues.
Unattended updates also no issue so not sure why one system versus another seems to have problems.

Hi crosscourt - thanks, you too.

No, this was on SparkyLinux - a couple of other users on there reported similar problem with what sounded like normal upgrades. It was also the subject of discussion on a couple of Debian Bug forums so it was not just limited to one distro. It may well have been a timing thing and that the revised update was released before most people had updated.

I have relied on unattended-upgrades since 2012/2013 and this is only the second time it broke anything. The other was an xserver u/g in 2013.

Normally I exclude grub but have been system hopping recently and copied over an old config file so itwas my own fault :D

My Q4OS drive is on the back burner while I try so sort out a silly problem with audio - which was why I decided to hop over here in the first place to have a chat about it - more of that later

Cheers

I had minor issues with Netrunner but it worked out fine. Look forward to your posts in the future.
I dont run Q4OS much any more but I have been testing MX Linux 19.2 KDE which is still in beta.
