Crowdstrike causes global outages

Post by crosscourt »

Its amazing how many businesses and services went down over a bad update from Crowdstrike. The fix happened this morning but many systems had to be restarted many times to solve the issue. I feel for anyone who was affected directly, as airports and hospitals really had a tough time with this issue.. You couldnt even cancel your flight and rebook due to the systems being down. Many operations at hospitals had to be delayed because they couldnt access the patients records. The issue caused Crowdstrikes stock prices to drop in reaction.

It's what we (IT staff) have been warning about for ages - single point of failure.
Compounded by MS clients, servers and cloud instances; azure was in trouble, too.

I had read that it was caused by a bad update. The piece I read did not say whether the problem came from installing the update, or whether the update itself was bad. Nothing I was doing today was disrupted. It is surprising how many choke points there are and from a lay perspective it seems as though they operate without any supervision or regulation, and suffer few if any consequences when they mess up. The stock company response seems to be, "OOPs!" And then the world just moves on.

Actually Linux was affected weeks before this incident as a Crowdstrike 9.04 update affected Linux as well.

You werent using Crowdstrike so nothing would have happened to your pc. Probably wont be an issue in the future, as many of the companies that were using it, will probably drop it for something else.
