The dying of the T580s

Post by wove »

My wife is a diehard Mac OS user, but after retiring new Mac hardware was just too pricey for the budget. I created a hackintosh for her with an X220, which she used for years, the the latest MacOS I could get installed on it was getting too out of date to be used. So then I created a hackintosh for her running on a Thinkpad T580 which she has been using since.

About a month ago she managed to break the USB C port which is used for charging. So I gave her my T580 to use and in less than a month she managed to break its charging port as well. In the meantime I found that the T580 could charge via the Thunderbolt port, which is also USB C and part of docking port connector. While that charges the machine and runs the machine, it is much much slower than the regular charging port.

She is really very hard on hardware, even the most rugged of machines. Her T580 is also missing a couple keycaps and she has dropped it enough that there are a few cracks in the casing. So in the end she has the nice RAM upgraded, non broken case with all the keycaps whose only problem is it charges very slowly. And my main Linux play machine is the remnants of her machine. It is just my pet peeve, but I really get annoyed using stuff that is not in excellent to perfect shape.

Just make sure if you use the Thunderbolt port for charging, that you have the Thunderbolt firmware updated. Firmware issue on these machines will cause the Thunderbolt port to stop working in and of itself if the Thunderbolt firmware is below something like v20.

Thanks, I did not know that. I have a 64GB SSD with Win11 installed along with the Lenovo software that checks for updates. I have not ran that for 6 months, so I will put that drive in the T580s and give it another run to make sure both machines are up to date on their firmware.
