Seems like it's easier IMO to add sid repos, create a /etc/apt/preferences.d file that pins sid to a low priority (<500), and pins firefox package to sid, then install using apt...

You might email him and suggest that and see what he says. I did that all the time in the old days and began a long term relationship with a few of the 3DFX devs over Glide and driver issues.
