My desktop is 7+ years old (on 3rd cpu, 3rd gpu, 3rd memory configuration, 2nd hard drive, 2nd optical drive), built it brand new and upgraded it over the years to try to keep it as relevant as I could.
The laptop I've owned the longest is about 1.5 years. Most of them are under a year, at least 3 are under 6 months.

Most of my systems are around 4 years old now but I did some upgrades. Laptops 5-6 years old but I keep some older systems for gaming and to run older OS.

My PC contains 50% of old components and 50% of new. What I really like, is RockSolid Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 CPU!

Core 2 Quads are great as I still have one system using the Q6700. Ive moved up to the Ivy Bridge i5 3.4ghz cpus.

Since I started to use Linux, I don't need powerful and expensive CPU's anymore. So I have bought Core i3 7100 for my new PC.

Nice cpu and I agree if youre at least using an Ivy Bridge cpu or newer youre fine, good performance. Use the cash to increase your memory amount as this offers a lot of advantages even for average users.

On Sunday I have got old aunt's laptop, because she has bought new.
There is Q4OS Orion on it.
crosscourt, please look at the installed kernel. Is it patched against Meltdown and Spectre or not? It is the latest kernel available in updates. Unfortunately, there is no BIOS updates for this old notebook.

I could be mistaken, but the last time I had looked it up, it was my understanding that Debian hasn't patched ANY of their 32-bit kernels yet.

No, that kernel is not a modified patched version and tlmiller is correct as 32bit patches havent happened yet.

You could try running Linux Mint 18.3 XFCE64bit or MX Linux 17 64bit on that laptop if youve got at least 2gb of ram. My Dell D430s run a 1.3ghz core 2 duo with 2gb of ram and they can run both OS pretty well. That way you can at least get the patched kernels, 4.13 for mint and 4.14 for MX Linux.
