Kinda odd for them to create an article when a single sentence would have sufficed:

"use your distro's package manger to install"

I'm unaware of any distribution that doesn't have putty available.

It's definitely something people want. I use it a lot because putty also installs puttgen, and puttygen is what AWS wants you to use. If you generate your keys with openssl in the "classic" pem format, AWS will reject them. Have to be in the "modern" putty private key format (ppk).
