I read this last week. It amazes me that they can talk about scanning programs and NOT mention SANE, since it's basically the best linux scanning tool there is (if you know how to get it set up).

I am...I agree TL, I've used it ever since I set up my new HP scanner. I think MX-17 used it as a default for my printer scanner. It works perfect...!

I believe Simple Scan uses SANE doesnt it? That dawned on me after i replied above that i wasnt familiar with SANE. Ive used Simple Scan the most but
I dont use scanners that much in Linux and have mostly used them with Windows.

So OpenSUSE has skanlite installed by default, and for the life of me I couldn't get my network scanner to work. Removed it and installed xsane, and up and running in 20 seconds...

I use it occassionally for my wife's laptop. She does a lot of scanning, me not so much. In a humorous twist of fate from normal, I had our printer working in no time in linux including scanning over the network, but it took me like 10 minutes to get it working on Windows.
