RAR to FAT32 files

Post by CaptNoize »

This may be a dumb question, but is there a GUI tool to convert an "RAR" file to "FAT32" file format..? I'm using MX-17,and have searched it's forum, but found nothing. I have a upgrade file I need to install on a electronic crossover, but it will only accept FAT32 format. I tried CLI to format/install on my flash drive, but it's more confusing than Quantum mathematics.... Help... :?

??? Fat32 is a file system format, not a compressed file format. I'm not understanding...

Let me explain. I downloaded the file from Nakamichi's website. It saved in my "downloads" as a RAR format, which has to be opened with Ark. The directions say to open the archive, and save it as a FAT32 file format. This is saved as a RAR. Can I convert it to a FAT32...? I read how to do it using command line, but it's way to confusing. I was hoping there was a way to convert it to FAT32 format, since this is the only format the x-over will read.

Maybe someone else has heard of it, but I'm not aware that there IS a fat32 FILE format. To my knowledge it only exists as a fileSYSTEM format (ie - Windows 95-base format).

Does it perchance mean you need to extract the files to an empty, fat32 usb? I have a laptop that is how it does firmware upgrades, put the files on an otherwise blank fat32 formatted usb and then insert the usb into the laptop when booting...

Yes...that's it. It say's make sure FAT32 format is selected in the Nakamichi directions. I guess they are assuming everyone uses Microflop. I don't see that option when I try to copy the file to the USB drive.

Easy (imo) way is just to use gparted to create a new DOS partition table on the drive, create a single partition of fat32 (vfat) type, and then after applying all changes mount it. Remember where you mounted it. Open rar file in ark and do archive > extract all and choose wherever you mounted the USB.

Ok...Thanks, TL... I'll look at Gparted and figure out how to do it. I'm not real familiar with how to create partitions. It might be easier for me to just download it on a Windows computer, unzip it,then copy it to the USB there.

Gparted looks and works VERY similarly to the Windows disk management system. I will admit for all my love of many cli tools, when it comes to managing disks, I do prefer gui, and gparted is a life saver as it's very simple. In KDE-land, there's partitionmanager, which is essentially just a qt version of gparted.

So, I did what tlmiller suggested; I used Gparted and it worked perfectly. I had never used it before,so I watched a few tutorials on YouTube, and extracted the file using Ark. Installed it on the flashdrive, plug that into the speaker, and everything updated...! Thanks,TL...! :D
