The only thing I would add, is that if someone REALLY wants to get into audio mixing or recording, make sure to have jack running. Either jack w/ alsa directly or jack integrated with pulseaudio. Jack is, by far, the #1 tool to make audio recording sound correct. If you're not familiar, jack is a low latency sound server that has much better capture performance than pulseaudio does.
