I actually stopped using smplayer. While it's nice, mpv's native "gui" has improved to a usable level, and so I no longer feel smplayer is needed (although I might go back since mpv does still lack a few things that would make it easier).

Ive used VLC for a long time so honestly havent tried SMPlayer in quite awhile.

I like the hardware acceleration performance better with mpv than vlc. I've found vlc performance to be...less than extraordinary when compared to mpv's or kodi's. Although Kodi is, IMO, a steaming mess when it comes to actually getting it to play anything.

Performance at least as I use it, is excellent with VLC, no complaints at all.
